Job description Job Summary: The Sod Farm Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of sod production and farm operations in Florida. This includes planning, developing, and executing the production of various turfgrasses while ensuring compliance with state regulations and best management practices. The manager must be able to lead a team and work with Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) to maintain a sustainable and productive operation. Key Responsibilities: Farm Operations & Production: Manage all phases of turfgrass production, including seeding, fertilizing, irrigating, mowing, and harvesting. Develop and implement production plans to meet customer demand and optimize yield. Operate and maintain a variety of farm machinery, such as tractors, sod cutters, and irrigation equipment. Coordinate farm-wide activities to ensure efficient production and timely delivery. Water Quality & Environmental Compliance: Work with FDACS representatives to enroll the operation in the Best Management Practices (BMP) Program. Properly implement and maintain all applicable BMPs, including those related to nutrient management, irrigation, and water resource protection. Maintain accurate records for at least five years, including nutrient applications, soil and tissue test results, and irrigation system maintenance. Ensure the use of an approved soil extraction method for soil testing. Schedule and record irrigation efficiency evaluations by a Mobile Irrigation Laboratory (MIL) at least every five years for pressurized systems. Implement strategies to protect sensitive water bodies like streams, rivers, springs, sinkholes, and wetlands. Store and handle fertilizers and other materials in a manner that prevents pollution. Team Management & Administration: Lead, supervise, and coordinate a farm crew. Manage the business side of the farm, which may include sales, customer service, and financial monitoring. Conduct site assessments to identify potential pollutant sources and pathways to water resources. Qualifications: Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum requirement. A bachelor's degree in an agriculturally related discipline such as Agronomy, Turfgrass Management, or Agricultural Operations Management is preferred. Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant experience managing an agricultural operation, with a focus on turfgrass production, is highly desirable. Prior experience with chemical and fertilizer programs is helpful. Skills: In-depth knowledge of sod production, soil science, pest management, and irrigation systems. Familiarity with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) BMP Program and its requirements. Proficiency in operating farm equipment. Strong analytical, organizational, and record-keeping abilities. Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
