The Opportunity
My client, an early stage Tech (HR/Legal is looking for a Payroll & Payments Manager with a builder’s mindset—someone who can run the day-to-day payroll operations across their global Employer of Record (EOR) footprint while also helping to design the systems, tools, and processes that will power our next stage of growth. This role is perfect for someone who wants to take ownership—not just of accurate payroll execution, but of how payroll should work as we scale across 100+ countries. You’ll work across internal teams and external vendors, bringing rigor, speed, and structure to a critical part of our business. You’ll be at the center of one of the most complex and meaningful problems in global HR: how do we make sure every employee in every country gets paid right, on time, every time—and how do we do that at scale?
Key Responsibilities
● Maintain full compliance with local labor laws, tax regulations, and reporting requirements in each active market
● Own and execute accurate, timely payroll across our active EOR and contractor markets
● Manage relationships with third-party payroll vendors, ensuring performance, compliance, and operational excellence
● Build and refine the systems and processes to scale our payroll operations—think automation, documentation, reconciliation, and tooling
● Partner cross-functionally with teams in Operations, Product, Customer Success, and Engineering to ensure payroll is seamless and integrated across the business
● Monitor payroll inputs, approvals, collections, and disbursements—ensuring data accuracy and audit readiness
● Act as the go-to subject matter expert for payroll-related questions and escalations from clients, internal teams, and partners
● Help shape our payroll playbook so we can enter new countries faster and more reliably
Great Candidates Will Have:
● 5-10+ years experience running multi-country payroll operations (EOR, PEO, or global payroll context strongly preferred)
● Strong process-building chops—you’ve improved or rebuilt workflows, not just maintained them ● Comfort managing external vendors and ensuring accountability
● Excellent data accuracy, attention to detail, and reconciliation skills
● Knowledge of payroll-related compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions
A builder mentality—you don’t wait for perfect systems, you help create them
● Great communication skills and confidence working cross-functionally
● A sense of ownership and urgency—when something’s broken, you fix it
Must be willing to work in the downtown Toronto office 5 days/week across from Union Station.
