Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Chief, is responsible for carrying out fire prevention duties as assigned. These duties will generally focus on the three pillars of Fire Prevention: Inspection, Investigation, & Public Education. Other duties may include supporting operations as a Safety Officer or Staging Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Inspect all types of public and private occupancies to ensure compliance with regulations. Identifies hazardous activities/processes, investigate violations, fire protection equipment and recommend the appropriate action.
  2. Investigates fires to determine origin and cause. Assist in gathering, preserving, documenting and processing of evidence.
  3. Advise stakeholders of safe operating procedures and methods in eliminating fire hazards.
  4. Prepares, oversees and delivers effective public education programs on fire prevention to groups and the public, as required.
  5. Works with and develops programming to support the inclusion of Suppression staff in Fire Prevention Activities.
  6. Liaises and collaborates with other stakeholders on matters pertaining to fire prevention, investigations, education and public safety.
  7. Performs unscheduled inspections in response to complaints concerning hazardous conditions.
  8. Prepares and maintains all required records, reports, statistics, correspondence and other related material.
  9. Follows, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  10. Act as Deputy Fire Chief as assigned.
  11. Other related duties.

Number of Hires Needed1Position Requirements

Working Conditions:

Considerable work is performed under normal office conditions. Responds to emergency situations, many that occur outside of normal working hours. May include on-call duties if necessary. Exposure to health hazards, smoke/fumes, chemicals, temperature and weather extremes during fire and other emergency situations.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

  • 5 years previous related experience including firefighting, fire inspection/investigation.
  • 6 months on the job training Fire fighter Level I and Il Certification considered an asset
  • Fire officer Il considered an asset
  • Incident Command 300 considered an asset
  • Class 5 Driver's license
  • Effective public relations and public speaking skills
  • Proven note taking, report writing, interview skills
  • Ability to work effectively, independently or in a team environment

Additional certifications required include but not limited to:

Standard first aid, CPR level C and oxygen therapy; Defensive Driving & Hazard Avoidance; etc.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Required Equipment to Operate:

Fire investigation tools, personal protection equipment and general office equipment, including computer skills to operate software programs related to work processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, etc.
