Job Summary

Are you passionate about uncovering untold stories in Canadian history? Do you identify as a person of African descent and/or seek to make a meaningful contribution to cultural education and community engagement?

The Museums of Mississauga is seeking a Museum Interpreter to support an upcoming exhibition focused on the history and legacy of Black enslavement in Canada. Through excellent customer service the Interpreter will lead educational programs and support engagement initiatives that reflect and honor the experiences of Black communities historically and today.

Evenings and weekends are required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead education programs for children and adults.
  • Develop content and provide tours of historic houses to a diverse public during public hours, events and private bookings.
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times to the public, including school groups, visiting artists, community groups and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with execution of special events including event set up and tear down, leading on-site activities, providing parking support and traffic direction, assisting event organizers.
  • Operate point of sale terminal and follow cash handling procedures for admissions and donations.
  • Follow schedule of cleaning and upkeep of historic house interiors. 
  • Research and information gathering.
  • Assigned tasks during public hours shifts.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Lived experience as a member of the African Diaspora preferred
  • Experience delivering educational programs or public engagement activities.
  • Comfort with or interest in storytelling, facilitation, and leading groups in formal or informal learning settings.
  • Must have completed or be enrolled in a post-secondary education program in History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Fine Arts, Education or related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
    Strong communication, collaboration, and customer service skills.
  • Familiarity with the history of Mississauga and the broader context of African Canadian history is an asset.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Valid Emergency or Standard First Aid with CPR B or C.
  • Must have completed High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification
  • Ability to travel to multiple museum sites within Mississauga.
  • Employment offer is conditional upon the successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level III) from an acceptable police service

Hourly Rate/Salary: $19.80 - $23.53
Hours of Work: up to 44 hours per week
Work Location: Bradley Museum; 1620 Orr Rd.
